De Compostfabriek
De compostfabriek is een gebouw opgebouwd uit kratten die gevuld kunnen worden met Groente-, fruit- en tuinafval. De kratten worden gevuld met verschillende lagen. Compostwormen gaan eerst in het onderste deel, wanneer ze deze krat leeg gegeten hebben kruipen zij via kruipgaten door naar de krat erboven. Zo gaat het proces voort. Wanneer de inhoud van de kratten leeggegeten zijn door de wormen kan de compost gebruikt worden voor nieuwe planten. Hierna kan de bak opnieuw worden opgebouwd. Zo kan het proces continue door blijven gaan.
Tegen kost in inwoning zijn in elk gebouw dagelijks honderden compostwormen aan het werk. De werkzaamheden bestaan voornamelijk uit eten. De wormen houden van vochtige ruimten en ze eten vrijwel al het groen afval. Volgens hun dieetwensen eten ze alleen liever geen dierlijk voedsel en gekookt eten. Wanneer ze het naar hun zin hebben zullen er vanzelf eieren en babywormen tevoorschijn komen.
Ik ben de compostfabriek gestart omdat er veel huizen in de stad zijn die geen GFT-bak hebben. In organisch afval zitten veel waardevolle elementen (zoals fosfor en kalium) die naar verwachting in de toekomst op zullen raken. Deze elementen zijn nodig voor een vruchtbare bodem. Door GFT te composteren blijven deze elementen behouden en kan organisch afval hergebruikt worden. Zo is de cyclus weer rond.
De compostfabriektorens zijn los te koop maar ook op aanvraag in combinatie met een educatiepakket (instructies + workshop).

The Compostfactory
The Compostfactory is an installation created out of several crates which all can be filled with organic waste. Each crate is divided in several different layers of waste that helps the compost proces and prevents a bad scent. Compostworms first go to the bottom crate and when they have eaten the whole crate they will continue to the next crate above that they will enter through the creep holes. This is how the process continues. When the contents of the crates are eaten by the worms, the left compost can be used as fertilizer for new plants. After this, the crates can be filled again and the proces can go on.
In return for board and lodging, hundreds of compostworms work in the composting factory every day. The work consists mainly out of eating. The worms like moist spaces and eat almost every type of small organic waste. According to their dietary requirements they preferably don’t eat any food that comes from animals and food that has been boiled. When the worms are having a good time, eggs and baby worms will appear.
Moniek started ’The Compostfactory' because there are many households in the city that don’t have a waste bin for organic waste. In organic waste there are many valuable elements (like phosphor and potassium) which are expected to be of scarcity in the future. These elements are needed for a fertile soil. By composting organic waste the elements will be used again and the natural cycle will be able to continue.
